In MLB The Show 26, drag bunting is one of the most underrated tools in your Diamond Dynasty or Road to the Show arsenal. While most players swing for power, mastering the drag bunt gives you a small-ball edge—letting you beat defensive shifts, create pressure on the infield, and manufacture runs with elite speed and timing.
1. Build the Ideal Drag Bunter
Not every player can bunt effectively. To maximize your drag bunt success:
99 Speed & 99 Stealing: Maxed-out speed ensures your runner can beat the throw to the bag or even turn a slow bunt into an extra-base opportunity.
High Bunt & Drag Bunt Ratings: These attributes minimize pop-ups or mis-hits, giving your bunts a soft, precise landing.
Bunting Quirks: Some cards come with specialized bunting animations. Players with these quirks can drop the ball directly into open spots, making it nearly impossible for defenders to react in time.
Avoid slow, power-focused hitters—they’re better suited for traditional contact or power swings.
2. Set the Directional Aim
Where your bunt lands can make or break the play. MLB 26 lets you control this using the Right Analog Stick:
Toward Third Base: Push the stick down-left during the pitcher’s windup. Perfect for catching infielders out of position or exploiting standard defensive shifts.
Toward First/Second Base: Push down-right. For left-handed hitters, a slow roll up the first-base line forces the fielder to stretch for a difficult play back to the bag.
Haptic Confirmation: Pay attention to your controller vibration—it confirms your directional target is locked, so you can focus on timing rather than guesswork.
Directional control is key to exploiting defensive weaknesses.
3. Master the Execution Timing
Drag bunting thrives on surprise. Unlike standard sacrifice bunts, timing is everything:
Late Squaring Window: Tap and hold the bunt button (Triangle on PlayStation / Y on Xbox) just as the pitcher releases the ball. This late trigger keeps the defense guessing.
Deaden the Ball: Release the bunt button a fraction of a second before contact. This softens the ball’s momentum, reducing pop-ups or double-play chances.
Avoid High Fastballs: Only bunt low or mid-zone pitches. Pitchers often throw high fastballs to induce easy pop-ups, which can ruin your drag bunt attempt.
Mastering timing takes practice, but once you get the feel, you can turn even slow pitches into perfectly placed, hard-to-field bunts.
4. Additional Tips
Use Left-Handed Hitters Wisely: Their drag bunts toward first base often sneak past infielders faster than right-handers.
Practice in Mini Seasons: A quick way to refine directional aim and timing without the pressure of Ranked Play.
Stack with Speed: Combining drag bunts with players who have elite speed maximizes pressure, often forcing fielding errors.
Drag bunting is more than a gimmick—it’s a strategic weapon. With the right player, precise directional aim, and perfect timing, you can turn a single bunt into a momentum-shifting play. |
