is it possible to weld 2.5" muffler inlet to a 1 3/4" tail pipe?

i bought a universal n1 muffler to replace my stock muffler but it seems like 2.5 onto a 1 3/4 pipe doesnt look like its rite.

is it possible for it to be welded? can a professional do it?
