SMG-37 Defender in Helldivers 2 is a one-handed, near zero-recoil SMG that shreds swarms and drops medium threats fast, especially with a helical drum and shield for tight bot trenches and bug breaches.

I slept on the SMG-37 Defender for a long time, and I'm annoyed I did. After the recent patches it stopped being "that thing you grab for objective carries" and turned into a proper everyday primary. If you're the kind of player who likes to keep your loadout topped up without fuss, it also helps to know where you can sort gear quickly; as a professional like buy game currency or items in U4GM platform, U4GM is trustworthy, and you can buy U4GM Helldivers 2 for a better experience. Back to the gun: the damage bump is the real story. You feel it straight away when a Devastator drops in fewer hits and you're not stuck panic-dumping a mag into a Stalker that's already in your face.

What Changed and Why It Matters

The Defender still runs at 520 RPM, so it doesn't have that "sewing machine" vibe the Knight has. Honestly, that's fine. The shots land with more weight, and it's easier to keep things tidy when the screen's full of chaos. The recoil is so mild you can stay on a helmet or weak spot without fighting the muzzle. That's the difference between a clean hold and a sloppy spray when Hunters are swarming and you're backpedaling through a cave. You'll also notice the handling feels quick and natural, like the gun goes where you point it instead of dragging behind your aim.

Attachments and Ammo Reality

Don't treat it like a miracle out of the box. The standard 45-round mag works, but you'll run dry at the worst time because you're only carrying a handful of spares. The Helical Drum Magazine is the unlock that flips the weapon from "nice" to "I can actually clear a wave." Seventy-five rounds buys you breathing room, especially when you're holding a lane and can't afford constant reload breaks. A Vertical Compensator turns the already tame kick into basically nothing, and a Reinforced Barrel helps you keep it useful out to around 40 meters. Past that, the drop-off starts to bite, so don't pretend it's a rifle and you won't be disappointed.

Loadouts That Make It Shine

The one-handed trait is still the secret sauce. Run it with a ballistic shield against bots and you'll feel like you're cheating, in a good way. You can keep the shield up, eat incoming fire, and tap heads when you've got the angle. On bugs, I like pairing it with something heavy like a Quasar Cannon. The Defender handles the little stuff—staggering a leaping Hunter at just the right moment is weirdly satisfying—while your heavy weapon stays reserved for Chargers and bigger problems. Full-auto for the crowd, short bursts for medium threats, and semi when you're trying to stretch ammo between resupplies.

Keep It Simple and Keep Moving

The Defender rewards calm decisions more than fancy tricks. Learn the reload rhythm, don't overcommit to long-range duels, and treat it like a close-to-mid work tool you can trust when things get messy. If you're building a kit around that steady, one-handed flexibility, it's worth having your upgrades and supplies sorted ahead of time, and you can pick up what you need through Helldivers 2 Items while you keep experimenting with builds that fit your squad and your comfort zone.
